Telecom pricing and ARPU: what a higher number can hide

Average revenue per user improves only when the offer makes sense to the right customers.

IN BRIEF

ARPU, or average revenue per user, is useful for judging telecom pricing only alongside subscriber mix, retention, usage and margin. A higher average can reflect better value or the loss of lower-spending customers.

A price increase can make a monthly chart look clever. A few weeks later, the service team may be handling complaints and the acquisition team may be replacing customers who left.

At MTS, I worked on Gujarat prepaid voice and data programmes. My CV records data-card subscriber growth of 35%, ARPU growth of 25% and programmes generating more than ₹15 crore a year. Those figures point to commercial progress. They do not mean a higher tariff by itself was the answer.

Read ARPU with the customer mix

ARPU is total service revenue divided by the relevant subscriber base. It does not tell you why the number moved. More data usage, a stronger product mix, fewer inactive users or customer loss can all alter the average.

I would look at cohorts and usage before making a pricing decision. Who uses the product heavily? Who is barely active? What problem does the offer solve well enough that a customer will pay for it again next month?

Make the value easy to understand

Prepaid buyers make frequent decisions. Confusing bundles and hidden conditions cost trust. A clear offer can be easier to sell and easier to retain, even when another option looks cheaper at first glance.

The sales team also needs a simple explanation of who the plan suits. If they cannot describe it without a table of exceptions, expect the customer to hesitate.

Check the consequence after launch

Track uptake, usage, complaints, retention and margin. Talk to the people selling and servicing the plan. A pricing change is not finished when the tariff is announced; it is finished when the customer behaviour is understood.

The best ARPU story is one in which customers use the service more because it works better for them.
