FIELD NOTES / STRATEGIC ACCOUNTS

Government and large enterprise accounts need a cleaner handoff

Complex buying groups make vague ownership expensive.

IN BRIEF

For government and large enterprise accounts, record the agreed requirement, decision owner, delivery owner, milestones and escalation route before the contract moves into execution. The customer should know who is responsible at every stage.

A large account can involve procurement, IT, finance, operations and the people who actually use the service. One good meeting with one department is useful. It is rarely the whole buying process.

My Vodafone portfolio included the Government of Gujarat, Adani Group and Zydus Cadila among 200 corporate accounts. I am not sharing confidential deal details here. The wider lesson from enterprise account work is that a sale creates several handoffs, each with a chance to lose context.

Map the people without guessing their authority

Ask who defines the requirement, who evaluates the solution, who signs, who will receive the service and who owns issues after activation. Titles do not always reveal the real path. The account record should reflect what the customer has actually confirmed.

If the process is formal, respect it. An informal shortcut can damage confidence even when it seems to save time.

Put promises in one place

Commercial terms, technical assumptions, implementation dates and service responsibilities need a shared record. The delivery team should not have to reconstruct the sale from emails. The customer should not be surprised by a condition that was never mentioned in discussion.

I prefer a short handoff meeting where the seller, delivery owner and customer-facing service lead agree on open items. It is less glamorous than a win announcement. It matters more a month later.

Stay present after activation

The account manager need not own every technical task. They do need to know whether the customer's expected outcome arrived, what is unresolved and who will fix it. That is how a large account becomes a durable relationship rather than a collection of contracts.

The biggest accounts deserve the clearest notes.
