FIELD NOTES / SALES AND MARKETING

The marketing-to-sales handoff is where good leads get lost

Lead volume means little when nobody agrees what the next conversation should be.

IN BRIEF

A sound marketing-to-sales lead handoff defines the target customer, the reason for contact, the evidence of interest, the response owner and the next action. Review rejected and stalled leads together so the definition improves.

A lead arrives with a name, phone number and campaign tag. Sales calls twice, gets no answer and marks it poor quality. Marketing points to the form completion. Both teams can be telling the truth.

My work has crossed sales, product and digital delivery. The same gap appears in each setting: one team measures the action it can see, while the customer is still trying to solve a different problem.

Agree on what deserves a call

Start with the customer you can actually serve. Industry, location and company size help, but a trigger is more useful. Did a branch open? Is a network contract ending? Did the buyer ask about a specific service? If the campaign captures none of that, the first sales conversation has to start from zero.

Write a short shared definition of a qualified lead. Include reasons to hold or decline one. A definition that accepts everything gives the sales team no priority.

Make the handoff readable

The seller needs source, interest, relevant message, contact permission and the expected response time. Keep the record brief. A field that nobody reads is no help to the customer.

The owner must be named. 'Assigned to sales' is not an owner. If the lead is passed to a partner or field team, record that transfer too. The customer should not be asked to explain the same enquiry three times.

Bring the rejected leads back to the table

Once a week, read a small sample together. Were the leads outside the target? Did sales respond too late? Was the campaign promise different from the offer? Fix the cause before buying more traffic.

Marketing and sales do not need identical dashboards. They do need a common view of what happened after the customer raised a hand.
