FIELD NOTES / SALES PROCESS

Reducing B2B sales cycle time without rushing the buyer

The fastest route is usually a cleaner decision path, not more reminders.

IN BRIEF

To reduce B2B sales cycle time, find the stage where opportunities wait, confirm the buying group early, agree on the next decision with the customer and prepare delivery inputs before proposal approval. More follow-up messages will not fix a missing decision maker.

A deal can sit in 'proposal sent' for three weeks while the seller sends polite reminders. The delay may have nothing to do with the document. Perhaps the finance owner has never seen the business case. Perhaps the technical team is still testing a requirement no one wrote down.

In Jio's SMB operation, my CV records a 35% reduction in sales cycle time. I would not claim one universal trick caused it. Sales cycles shorten when the process removes avoidable waiting without taking away the customer's chance to decide properly.

Find the waiting stage

Look at actual elapsed time by stage and deal type. Where do qualified opportunities stop moving? Is the delay inside the customer organisation, inside your own approvals or at delivery? Each requires a different answer.

I also read a few lost and stalled opportunities, not only the successful ones. Fast wins can give a false picture of the work most sellers face.

Agree on the next decision, not just the next call

Before a proposal goes out, ask what the customer will do with it. Who will review it? What questions are likely? What else has to be approved? A dated follow-up with no decision path is just a diary entry.

If another stakeholder needs to be involved, invite them while the problem is still being defined. Late surprises stretch the cycle and can make a technically sound offer look careless.

Prepare the handoff earlier

Sales sometimes promises a start date before checking installation, stock or service capacity. The resulting correction consumes more time than an early conversation would have.

The goal is not to push people to sign sooner than they should. It is to stop making them wait for answers we could have prepared.
